Copper Tube, Tubing and Fittings Flashcards
Define Annealing
To heat and then cool, which softens and makes the copper more flexible
describe Compression fitting
A fitting designed to join tube by means of pressure or friction. This type of joint uses a ferrule and nut
what is Flaring
To spread the end of the tubing
what is Hard temper tube recommended for and where should it be installed and why?
Generally recommended for exposed lines, such as hot and cold water supplies to fixtures or any lines suspended on hangers. The rigidity of the hard temper tube resists sagging and deflection stresses between supports
Where should Soft temper tube be used and why?
Preferred for lines buried underground or laid in floors, because of its flexibility (annealing) allows the tube to give or flex if ground movement occurs. Soft temper tube can be manipulated through small holes and is ideal for remodelling and repair work on piping systems
what is Solder
A metal or metallic alloy that is melted and then used to join metallic surfaces
what does “Types” refer to when it comes to copper
refers to the wall thickness of the copper tube
Copper Type DWV

what types are most often used for residential underground water systems?
What joining methods can be used underground?
Soft types K and L are most often used for residential underground water systems
When run under ground joints must be compression or flared
what types are used for hot and cold water distribution lines
Types K, L, and M, how ever most commonly used are Types L and M
What types can be used for Drainage, Waste and Vent Lines
Copper type DWV is specially engineered for above ground Drainage, waste and venting lines, as well as non-pressure applications
Types K, L, and M are also approved for DWV but are more expensive then type DWV
What types are used for Gas Fitting
Above Ground:
Underground:
For above ground gas lines use Types K or L copper tube or type G copper tubing
For underground gas lines use Types L or G with externally coated extruded PVC resin or use type K
Soft Soldering
what temperature is it bellow?
What does the first number in the % signify
What does Flux do?
What is the max lead content in flux/solder for a potable water system?
where can 50/50 solder be used?
Must be below 575 degrees C (1000 degree F)
Solder wire shows a % of metals, tin is always the first number ex: 50/50 = 50% tin and 50% Lead
Flux removes oxides and impurities well joint is being heated
Flux/solder can not have lead content over 0.2% in a portable water system (2.2.9.2.2)
Note 50/50 solder can only be used in DWV systems
Hard solder/siner soldering/brazing
Temperatures above 575 degrees C (1000 degrees F)
Bcup- used to braze copper to copper
BAg- used to braze dissimilar metals
Flus can be a part of brazing stick
Biggest concern when brazing is heating metal too much and it melts
