IRDS Flashcards
Name the components of surfaxin (synthetic surfactant)
- phospholipids and a fatty acid (mimicking dppc)
- sinapultide (a small segment of surfactant protein B)
Explain the use of corticosteroids for preventing IRDS
Used pre-birth to encourage the maturation of lungs, gut, brain, etc
- promotes the development of type 1 and 2 epithelial cells (which increases surfactant production)
Define IRDS
Infant respiratory distress syndrome. = insufficient surfactant production
Signs and Sx?
Grunting, cyanosis (turning blue from hypoxia), tachypnea
How would fluid clearance from lungs help with IRDS?
Clearing the excess fluid will aid gas exchange
When is cortisol / corticosteroids indicated?
Most effective at 34 weeks or earlier (this is when IRDS is most common)
Is ventilation support or ECMO useful in IRDS?
Yes
