IQ &Intelligence Flashcards

1
Q

Main points on whether IQ measures intelligence :

A

IQ captures facets intelligence, specific skills and abilities that when added up give an IQ score.

Strong correlations btw IQ scores and predicting life events (Wayne et al 2016)

BUT arbitrary cut off point of 70 and disturb on 100 = how valid is it in real life = no proof that ppl with less than 70 IQ can’t function or need more clinical support.

Lower IQ in non-white Americans = result of other factors rather than intelligence? Issues of prejudice and discrimination.

Q

Is academic performance a true measure of intelligence?

A

Not fully = focuses on specific skills and abilities. Exams are based on expected answers = ignores creativity, divergent thinking

So academic views = measure of crystallised intelligence rather than fluid intelligence.

Q

How does socio economic status influences intelligence?

A

Strong correlation btw SES status and intelligence, in particular with PARENTS VARIABLES = their education, occupation, income

“Money can’t buy love, but it sure appears to buy intelligence” (Schafer et al 2014).

More money = more access to resources : chronic inadequate diet can disrupt brain development& impair immediate intellectual functioning. + not having access to health or adequate emotional support.

Q

What is the Flynn effect

A

Flynn effect refers to the observation that IQ points increased rapidly in the 20th century, on average 3 IQ points per decades since 1910; BUT
This seems to be stagnating, plateauing = a reverse Flynn effect seems to be happening.

Q

Example reasons for the reverse Flynn effect

A

A dyzgentics effect = accumulating defective genes overtime?

Socio cultural factors = Flynn mentioned youth culture, gaming, not reading enough

Outscourcing our crystallised intelligence = everything on hand, google search, not having to learn phone numbers etc. more life options

Q

Cite an example of biological proof for high IQ leading to better performances

A

Use of evoked potential shows people with higher IQ are QUICKER , they also use less brain waves when performing a test so is intelligence a result of quicker brain processing?
=> however, what factors influence the development of this fast processing, could it be linked to socio cultural or environmental factors, life events, etc?
