IPv4
32-bit address written in dotted-decimal notation.
Octet
8-bit portion of IP address. There are 4 octets in an IP address.
Subnet Mask
Determines which bits of an IP address belong to the network and the host.
Prefix Notation
aka Slash Notation
/number of bits used for network portion of address
Classful Masks
Default subnet masks associated with Class A, B, and C addresses
Loopback IP Address
Address with 127 in the first octet.
Represents the device itself.
NAT
Network Address Translation
Router converts private IP addresses to publicly routable addresses.
Types of Addresses
Unicast
Broadcast
Mutlicast
Broadcast Domain
Address to target all devices on a subnet / network
255.255.255.255
Targets all devices on the network local to the sending device
Directed Broadcast Address
Targets all devices on a remote network.
Default Gateway
Routes traffic from sender’s subnet to destination subnet
FQDN
Fully Qualified Domain Name
DNS
Domain Name Systrem
Translates FQDN into IP address
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
