Ions Flashcards
What is an ion?
An ion is a molecule with a charge due to a loss or gain of an electron/s
What charge does ions always have?
Neutral charge because theres an equal amount of protons and electrons
What charges does a proton, electron and neutron have?
positive, negative, neutal
What is a valence shell?
The outer electron shell of an atom
If the valence shell is not stable, what does that mean?
If the valence shell lacks a full set of electrons, it means the atom is not in a stable configuration.
What are the two ways to getting a full valence shell?
- Sharing valence electrons with another atom so that they both have a full shell (forming a covalent bond)
- Gaining or losing valence electrons and forming ionic bonds.
How are positive ions formed and why they have a positive charge?
Positive ions, or cations, are created when atoms lose electrons, resulting in an overall positive charge due to an excess of protons.
How are negative ions are formed and why they have a negative charge?
Negative ions, or anions, are formed when atoms gain one or more electrons, which leads to a negative charge because the atom then has more electrons than protons.
What is an ionic bond?
An Ionic bond is the bond formed by the transfer of valence electrons to attain stability.
How are ionic bonds formed?
An ionic bond can be formed after two or more atoms loss or gain electrons to form an ion.
What is an ionic compound
An ionic compound is a structure made up of ions held together by ionic bonds
How are ions formed, and why do they have a charge
Ions are formed when atoms gain or lose electrons, causing cations and anions. These charges are due to an imbalance between the number of protons and electrons in the ion.
