Acids and Bases Flashcards
What is an acid?
An acid is a molecule that releases hydrogen ions (H+) when it reacts with water
What are the three common acids you should know?
Hydrochloric acid, Sulphuric acid, Nitric acid
What is a base?
A base is what contains hydroxide ions, when alkalis react with water, they release hydroxide ions.
What is a pH scale?
The pH sclae measures how acidic or basic a compound is
What values on the pH determine if a solution is acidic, neutral and basic?
below 7 = acidic
7 = neutral
above 7 = base
What happens in a neutralisation reaction?
Its where an acid and a base have a reaction where the products end up neutral.
What is the word equation for neutralisation?
Acid + Base –> salt + water
Word equation for acid + carbonate?
Acid + carbonate –> salt + water + carbon dioxide
