Ions Flashcards
What are ions?
An atom that has an imbalance of protons and electrons
What happens when an atom loses electrons?
It develops a positive charge due to having more protons (positive particles) than electrons (negative particles)
What happens when an atom gains electrons?
It develops a negative charge due to having more electrons (negative particles) than protons (positive particles)
What is the difference between intramolecular and intermolecular forces?
Intramolecular forces are ionic, covalent, and metallic bonds whilst intermolecular forces only occur between covalent bonds
What is electrostatic attraction?
Attractive or repulsive forces between particles that are caused by their electric charges
What types of ionic compounds conduct energy?
molten and aqueous
What is necessary for electrical conduction?
There needs to be charged, mobile particles
What is the difference between monatomic and polyatomic ions?
Monatomic is an ion with only one atom, polyatomic is an ion containing more than one atom
What do polyatomic anions end in?
“ite” or “ate”
What do monatomic end in?
“ide”
What are the exceptions to polyatomic ions ending in “ite” and “ate”?
Hydroxide, cyanide, and peroxide
What are the only positive polyatomics?
Ammonium and hydronium
What comes first when naming an ionic compound?
The cation
All metals are ____
Cations
What are lewis structures?
Dot structures and visual diagrams representing the valence electrons present in atoms, ions, and molecules
