Q

What is an Ion

A

A charged atom/ group of atoms. It’s charged because it has lost or received electrons.

11
Q

Why do atoms form Ions

A

Atoms can gain or lose electrons to get a full outer shell. This makes them more stable

12
Q

Why are Ions charged

A

Atoms normally have the same number of protons and electrons so they are neutral overall. If an atom loses an electron, it gets a charge of +1 as it has more protons than electrons. If an atom gains an electron, it gets a charge of -1 as it has more electrons than protons.

16
Q

How can you tell the difference between Protons and Neutrons in the Nucleus

A

1 Sub-atomic particle will be coloured in and the other won’t. The Sub-atomic particles which have the same amount of Electrons on the shells are Protons, therefore the other shaded sub-atomic particle are the Neutrons.
