Q

Explain the boiling and melting points of Ionic compounds

A

The strong forces of electrostatic attraction require a lot of energy to break them, so therefore the boiling and melting points of a ionic compound are high

Q

What 2 things are needed for something to conduct electricity

A

For something to conduct electricity, it must have charged particles which must also be free to move.

7
Q

Can ionic compounds conduct electricity when in a solid state

A

No because the charged particles are not free to move

Q

Describe the intermolecular forces between polymers

A

There are more intermolecular forces between larger polymers. The longer chains also tend to get tangled up with each other. More energy is needed to overcome the forces to melt or boil the substance, so polymers have higher melting and boiling points.
