Ionisation Energy Flashcards
What is the first ionisation equation for oxygen?
O (g) -> O +(g)+ e-
What are the factors affecting ionisation energy and why?
Nuclear charge- more protons the stronger the attraction to electrons
Distance from nucleus-attraction falls off v rapidly. Close to nucleus more attracted than one far away
Shielding- number of electrons between nucleus and outer electrons and nucleus increases lessens pull of nucleus
Define second ionisation energy and give the equation for oxygen
The second ionisation energy is the energy needed to remove 1 electron from from each ion in 1 mole of gaseous 1+ ions to form one mole of gaseous 2+ ions
O+(g)->O2+(g)+e-
How can you use a graph to tell which group an atoms in?
There will b a jump in ionisation energy
Define first ionisation energy
The first ionisation energy is the energy needed to remove one electron from each atom in 1 mole of gaseous atoms to form 1 mole of gaseous 1+ ions
