Q

what happens to FAIE across a period

A
  • nuclear charge increases causing atomic radius to decrease as the outer shell is pulled closer to the nucleus so the distance between the nucleus and outer shell decrease
  • shielding by inner electrons is constant as electrons are being added to the same shell
  • more energy is required as it becomes harder to remove a shell

Q

what happens to IE when you change from one period to the next

A
  • IE decreases greatly between the last element in the previous period and the first one in the next period :
  • bc distance from the nucleus increases as another shell is being added
  • there’s increased shielding effect bc of newly added shell
  • there’s an increase in nuclear charge but its outweighed by the above 2
