Definitions Flashcards
Relative atomic mass
is the weighted average mass of an atom of a given element compared to the unified atomic mass unit
Unified atomic mass unit
1/12 of a carbon 12 isotope
Relative isotopic mass
mass of a given isotope to 1 UAMU
Relative Molecular mass
is weighted average of a molecule compared to the unified atomic mass unit
Relative formula mass
is the weighted average mass of an ionic compound compared to the unified atomic mass unit
Mole
it is the amount of substance that contains as many elementary particles as are in exactly 12 grams of the carbon-12 isotope
E.F
gives us the simplest ratio in which atoms are combined e.g ch2
M.F
gives us the actual number of atoms in each molecule
anhydrous
does not contain water in it’s lattice
hydrous
contains water in its lattice
1st I.E
the Ionisation Energy (IE) of an element is the amount of energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous atoms of an element to form one mole of gaseous ions
ionic bonding
the electrostatic force of attraction between a pair of atoms that have an opposite charge
electronegativity
is the tendancy that an atom has to withdraw electrons to itself
