Ionisation And Shells Flashcards
Definition of atomic charge
Amount of protons (total charge)
Definition of first ionisation energy
The amount of energy required to remove one electron from each atom IN one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of gaseous 1+ ions
How does atomic radius affect IE
The larger the AR the increased distance of the outer e- from nuclear, decreased nuclear attraction –> lower IE required
How does nuclear charge affect IE
The more proton the GREATER the nuclear charge, the GREATER the nuclear attraction, GREATER IE
How does electron shielding and screening affect IE
Inner shells REPEL outer shells
MORE shells, increased shielding, less nuclear attraction
Lower IE
IE down periods
Decreases:
Atomic radius increases, less NA
Electron shielding increases, more repulsion
IE across periods
Atomic radius decreases (more +’s more pulling force, atom pulled in)
Nuclear chArge increases-more p
IE in successive IE
Increases as more energy is required to remove an electron from an ION than atom
What’s a shell and orbital
Shell- a group of atomic orbitals
Atomic orbitals- a region within an atom that can hold up to 2 electrons
4th ionisation of chlorine
Cl 3+(g)—-> Cl 4+ + e-
