Q

Ionic Radius

A

Ionic radius: the radius of an atoms ion.
Cation = positive. charged ion
Anion = negatively charged ion.
Decreases moving to the right of the periodic table.
Increases moving down the periodic table.

It incresses moving down a group as the number of shells incese and the effective
nuclear charge stays constant.
It decreases moving left to right as the number of eccupied shells in the ions remains
constant (for species of the same charge) , but the effective nuclear charge increases..
The valence elections become more strongly attracted to the nucleus, so ionic radi
decreases.
(Anions ase larger than cations in the same period).
