Ionic equations Flashcards
how to write ionic formulas
the cation is written first, followed by the anion, subscripts are used to denote multiples of the same ion, superscripts are used to denite the charge of the ion
polyatomic ions
ions that are made from multiple atoms covalently bonded together
how is the name of the ionic compound formed
the first word is the full, uncharged name of the element or molecule from which tthe cation is formed, the second is the namee of the element/molecule from which the anion is formed
monoatomic anions name
element + ide
anions contaiining oxygen
element + ate
potassium bromide
KBr
sodium sulfide
Na2S
magnesium sulphate
MgSO4
calcium carbonate
CaCO3
barium nitrate
Ba(NO3)2
how is water wrote in a dissolving reaction
H2o is written above the arrow, solvent is written below, its not a reactant because there is no chemical reaction when dissolving occurs
double displacement reaction
when ionic compounds can react with each other and ‘swap’ partners
exception to tthe valence rule in ionic bonding
lithium, it has once eleectron in its valence shell so loses this electron and the inner shell becomes the valejce shell with 2 electrons
ethanoate is actually
acetate
hydrogen carbonate is actually
bicarbonate
