Ionic, Covalent And Nanoscience Questions Flashcards

1
Q

Why is nitrogen a gas at room temp?

A

Nitrogen has weak inter-molecular forces which require less energy to break.
This means less energy is required to break intermolecular forces so they have lower melting and boiling points.

Q

Why does Helium exist only as a single atom?

A

It has a full outer shell so highest energy level is full leaving it no need to bond.

Q

Why does sodium chloride have a quite high melting point?

A

Giant ionic lattice, meaning bonds between ions are quite strong because there are so many to break.

Q

Why is Graphite softer than diamond?

A

Because Layers of graphite can slide because layers have weak inter molecules forces between the layers.

Whilst each atom in diamond is strongly bonded to 4 others, so no carbon atoms are able to move/slide.

Q

Why can Graphite conduct whilst diamond can not?

A

Graphite is bonded to 3 other carbons so there are many free electrons from all the carbon atoms.

Diamond is bonded to 4 so there are no free electrons.

The electrons which can move around are the flow of electrons and are the charge which conducts electricity.

Q

Why don’t companies test products?

A

Find something which means they can’t sell it anymore e.g. harmful effects

Testing is time consuming
