ionic compounds Flashcards
what is the structure of an ionic compound
giant ionic lattice
what do the ions form
a closely packed regular lattice arrangement and there are very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions.
what are the properties of ionic compounds
high melting and boiling points due to the many strong bonds between the ions.
what happens when they are solid
the ions are held in place, so the compounds cannot conduct electricity.
what happens when ionic compounds melt
the ions are free to move and they’ll carry electric current
what happens when ionic compounds dissolve in water
ions separate and are all free to move in the solution. carrying electric current.
how do you work out the empirical formula
1) look at the diagram and work out what ions are in the compound
2) work out what charges the ions will form
3) Balance the charges so the charge of the empirical formula is 0
