formation of ions Flashcards
what are ions
charged particles - they can be single atoms (e.g. Cl-) or groups of atoms.
why do atoms lose gain electrons
form ions, get a full outer shell like noble gases
what happens when metal form ions
lose electrons from their outer shell to form positive ions
what happens when non-metals form ions
gain electrons into their outer shell to form negative ions
E.G. if 2 electrons are lost what is the charge
2+
which elements most readily form ions
1, 2 ,6 and 7
how many outer electrons do elements have in the same group
elements in the same group all have the same number of outer electrons
how many ions do group 1 elements form
1+
how many ions do group 2 elements form
2+
how many ions do group 6 elements form
2-
how many ions do group 7 elements form
1-
give an example of a magnesium atom trying to form a magnesium ion
Mg is in group 2, so it loses 2 electrons to form a magnesium ion (Mg2+) : Mg (arrow) Mg2+ + 2e-
give an example of an oxygen atom trying to form a oxygen ion
O is in group 6 so it gains 2 electrons to form an oxide ion (O2-)
: O + 2e- (arrow) O2-
why do simple ions often have noble gas electronic structures
they gain enough electrons to fill all the spaces in their outer levels.
