Ionic Compounds Flashcards
What is an ionic compound
It is a metal formed with a non-metal to get a full outer shell
What are the properties of an ionic compound
•High melting and boiling point
•They can conduct electricity but only when they are melted
•They are very strong
How would you break an ionic bond
With loads of energy this requires a high melting/boiling point
Why can’t ionic compounds cannot conduct electricity when solid
Because everything is fixed. However when they are melted it allows the charged particles to move about
When ionic compounds form which has a positive charge and which has a negative
The metal has the positive charge and the non-metal has the negative charge
Hydroxide
OH-
Sulphate ion
SO42-
