IONIC COMPOUNDS Flashcards
What is an ion?
Ions are formed when atoms gain or lose electrons, they have a complete outer shell of electrons.
Why do metals form positively charged ions?
Because metals loose electrons to have a full outer shell of electrons
Why do ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten/aqueous?
Because the charged ions are free to move about and carry their charge.
What are the melting/boiling point of ionic compounds
Ionic compounds have high melting/boiling point because ionic bonds are very strong and it requires a lot of energy to overcome them.
What is the mass of an atom’s nucleus?
1/10000
What are the boiling/melting points of ionic compounds like?
They have high melting/boiling points because ionic bonds are very strong and requires a lot of energy to overcome them
