COVALENT COMPOUNDS Flashcards
What is covalent bonding?
When non-metallic elements share pairs of electrons
Can small molecules conduct electricity? Why?
They have no overall electrical charge
What are the melting/boiling points of small molecules like?
Low melting/boiling points because they have weak intermolecular forces which are easier to overcome
What are small molecules?
They contain a small number of non-metal atoms joined together by covalent bonds.
How many covalent bonds in graphite?
3
How many bonds in diamond?
4
Can diamond conduct electricity?
No
Can graphite conduct electricity?
Yes,Graphite has delocalised electrons, just like metals. These electrons are free to move between the layers in graphite
What can carbon nanotubes be used for?
Wiring in aeroplanes
Computer components
Lightweight aircraft parts
What is a catalyst?
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without itself being consumed in the reaction.
