Ionic Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
what structure do ionic compounds have?
A
they have a latice structure where the ions form repeating patterns and have very strong electrostatic forces of attraction oppositely charged ions.
2
Q
what are the properties of ionic compounds ?
A
- they have a high mp and bp and this is because it takes lot of energy to break the strong attractions between the ions
- many ionic compound can dissolve in water
- solid ionic compounds don’t conduct electricity because the ions can not move
- when ions are free to move, they can carry electric charge but this happens when the compound dissolves or melts
