giant covalent structures Flashcards
1
Q
what kind of bond do they have?
A
strong covalent
2
Q
what are the properties of GCS?
A
- very high mp and bp
- cant conduct electricity because they don’t have charged particle that are ready to move.
- they aren’t soluble in water
3
Q
what are giant covalent structure (GCS) made out of ?
A
carbon atoms
4
Q
what are 2 type of GCS ?
A
Diamond and Graphite
5
Q
describe the diamond structure
A
- made up of carbon atoms that each form four covalent bonds.
- makes diamond really hard
- used to cut tools
take long to break so have high mp - electrons are in covalent bond so aren’t free to move.
- doesn’t conduct electricity
6
Q
Describe the Graphite structure
A
- only forms three covalent bonds so arranged in hexagons.
- aren’t any covalent bond between the layers of sheet so they are held weekly
- week attractions mean they are free to move.
- this makes graphite soft and slippery
- each carbon atoms have one electron that’s free to move meaning it can conduct electricity and often used to make electrodes.
