Ionic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is ionic bonding?
A
In ionic bonding atoms lose or gain electrons to get a full outer shell of electrons and form ions (charged particles)
2
Q
Why are ions strongly attracted to each other?
A
Because of their positive and negative charges (opposites attract)
3
Q
What are ionic bonds formed between?
A
A metal and a non-metal.
4
Q
What happens to an electron that loses electrons?
A
It becomes a positive ion and is called a cation.
5
Q
What happens to an atom that gains electrons?
A
It becomes negative and is called an anion.
6
Q
How is an ionic bond formed?
A
Through the swapping of electrons.
7
Q
What keeps the elements in an ionic bond together?
A
The opposite charges of ions: electrostatic forces.
