ionic bonding Flashcards
what is an ion
an electrically charged particle formed from an atom or a group of atoms by loss or gain of electrons
how are positive ions formed
by the loss of one or more electrons
how are negative ions formed
by the gain of one or more electrons
what does the charge of an ion depend on?
the number of electrons lost or gained.
what is the charge for metal ions?
for most metal ions the number of positive charges is the same as the group number. so aluminium in group 3 is 3+ ions
what is the charge for non-metal ions ?
the negative charge is 8 minus the group number. so oxygen in group 6 forms 8-6=2- ions (oxide ions)
what do metals form
positive ions
what do non-metals form
negative ions
how are ionic bonds formed?
between reactive metals and non-reactive metals
what is an ionic lattice made up of?
an ionic lattice is made up of positive and negative ions
the lattice is held together by electrostatic attractions
what is an ionic bond?
an ionic bond is a strong bond formed by the electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions on an ionic structure
