Ionic Bonding Flashcards
Where does ionic bonding occur ?
Metals and non- metals
Why does it only happen in Metals and Non-metals?
Metals want to LOOSE electrons and Non metsls want to GAIN electrons in order to be stable.
What is the attraction called between these ions?
Electrostatic attraction
The larger the charges the harder it is to pull apart, what does this mean?
A higher melting and boiling point
If the metals and non-metals have a different amount of electrons what do we have to do in order to make them stable?
Add atoms.
What makes a substance have a higher or lower M+B point?
The larger the charge (the stronger the electrrostatic attraction) more energy is needed to break them therefore the higher the M+B points. The smaller the charge the lower the M+B point will be. etc……
What happens when ions of opposite charge join together.?
They form a giant ionic lattice.
What are 3 properties of ionic substances?
- Brittle
- High melting and boiling points
- they are unable to conduct electricity
What does OILRIG stand for?
Oxidation Is Loss Reduction Is Gain
