Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What are ions?
Charged particles that have lost or gained electrons.
Metal atoms form … Ions
Positive
Non metal atoms form ….. Ions
Negative
What are ionic bonds?
Strong, electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions.
What atoms are ionic bonds between?
A metal and a non metal
Do metals atoms lose or gain electrons?
Lose
Do non metal atoms lose or gain electrons?
Gain
What is the product called from ionic bonding?
An ionic compound
Why do Ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points?
Because ionic bonds are very strong and a lot of energy is needed to break them.
When do ionic compounds conduct electricity? Why?
When dissolved in water or melted because their ions are free to carry the current.
Why can’t ionic compounds conduct electricity in a solid?
Because their ions cannot move around in their lattice structure .
