Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What are ions?
Charged particles
When do negative ions form?
When atoms gain electrons
When do positive ions form?
When atoms lose electrons
What is ionic bonding?
When a non metal and a metal react together. The metal atom loses electrons and the non metal gains these electrons
How are the atoms attracted to each other?
Strongly attracted by electrostatic forces
What kind of melting and boiling points do ionic compounds have?
High melting and boiling points due to the strong attraction between the ions. It takes a large amount of energy to overcome this attraction
Do ionic compounds conduct electricity?
When they are solid they don’t conduct electricity because the ions are fixed in place and can’t move. When the compound melts the ions are free do move and will carry an electric current
