Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What is ionic bonding?
The electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
What is a giant ionic lattice?
A 3D structure of negative and positive ions held in place by the strong electrostatic attraction between the opposite chargers.
What are the properties of a giant ionic lattice?
.all ionic compounds are solid at RTP (high melting points) as have strong ionic bonds
.dont conduct electricity whilst solid as the ions are fixed but can when molten as the ions are free are move
.many dissolve in suitable solvents e.g water (only if the ion-dipole attractions with a polar solvent are stronger than ion-ion attractions, they dissociate into separate ions)
What all ionic compounds are soluble in water?
Nitrates
