Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What two types of elements form ionic bonds?
Metals and nonmetals.
A bond is formed between…
A positive and negative ion
What does it mean when an atom has extra electrons?
It means that the atom is unstable. Instability.
What does “electrostatic attraction” between the positive and negative ions do?
The electrostatic attraction between the positive and negative ions holds the atoms together to form the compound.
What are some properties of ionic compounds when solids?
Ionic compounds are usually crystalline, have high melting points, and are also non-conductors of electricity when solids.
What are some properties of ionic compounds when liquids?
In liquid state, or state or when they are dissolved in water, the ions are free to move and they will conduct an electric current.
Since ionic compounds are crystalline, what happens to them when they are stressed?
They tend to shatter when shatter when stressed, therefore are also brittle.
Explain how ionic bonding occurs?
Ionic bonding when a metal transfers one or more electrons to a nonmetal so that they can both have a full octet of electrons or a valence shell.
