Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What is an ionic bond?
A chemical bond formed between two ions (a metal and a non-metal) with opposite charges.
Describe the process which created an ionic bond?
When a metal atom reacts with a non metal atom, electrons in the outer shell of the metal are transferred. The metal ions lose electrons to become a positive ion and non-metal atoms gain electrons to become negative ions.
Which group do ions produced by metals in groups 1 and two and non-metals in groups 7 and 8 have the same electronic configuration as?
The noble gasses (group 0)
What type of diagram represents the electron transfer during ionic bonding?
The dot and cross diagram.
What would be the charge of a potassium ion in an ionic bond?
+(positive)
Define ionic compound.
A compound composed of positive and negative ions.
What are ionic compounds held together by?
Electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions.
What properties do all ionic compounds have in common?
-High melting points because it takes a lot of energy to overcome the attraction of the bonds.
-High boiling points ditto to above
-They can only conduct electricity when melted as the electrons are free to move and will carry an electric current.
-They can only conduct electricity when dissolved because the ions are separate and free to move in the solution and can carry an electric current.
What is an ion?
An ion is an electrically charged atom or group of atoms
