Covalent Structures and Properties Flashcards
What are the two types of structures?
Simple molecular substances and Giant covalent structure.
What are three examples of Giant Covalent structures?
Diamond, graphite and Silicon Dioxide.
Are covalent bonds strong or weak? And how much energy is needed to break them?
Very strong. Lots of energy need to break.
What are Giant Covalent structures made of?
Huge numbers of Non-Metal atoms
Does a Giant covalent structure have a high or low m/bpt?
High
Does giant Covent structures conduct electricity?
No, they do not conduct electricity (even when molten).
What are Simple molecular substances?
They are small molecules that are made up of just a few covalently bonded atoms.
What is a Giant covalent structure?
They are covalently bonded in regular repeating lattices which makes them much stronger and gives them much greater m/bpt.
