Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What type of elements is ionic bonding between?
Metal atoms and non-metal atoms
What is ionic bonding?
The loss or gain of electrons to form ions with Noble gas structures
What happens when a group 1 metal reacts with a non metal?
An ionic compound is formed, the metal ion has a +1 charge as it loses one electron
What happens when a Halogen reacts with a metal?
An ionic compound is formed and the ion has a -1 charge as the non-metal gains one electron.
What happens when the electrons are transferred in ionic bonding?
Creates ions (charged particles), which are attracted to oppositely charged ions through electrostatic forces to form a giant ionic lattice.
What are some examples of common ionic compounds?
- Sulfate SO4^2-
- Hydroxide OH-
- Nitrate NO3^-
- Carbonate CO3^2-
- Ammonium NH4^+
