Ionic bonding Flashcards
How do ionic bonds form?
They form when a metal gives one or more electrons to a non-metal.
What does a metal give to a non-metal?
Electron(s).
In order to have an ionic bond, what two things do you need?
A metal and a non-metal.
Describe the structure of an ionic compound.
- Electrostatic attraction between completely oppositely charged ions (positive and negative).
- Arranged in a giant ionic structure.
What is meant by the term ionic bond?
Electrostatic attraction between completely oppositely charged ions (positive and negative).
What type of diagram shows the electrons in shells for all the atoms in a compound?
A dot and cross diagram.
If there are two electrons in the metal, but only one needed to created a full outer shell in the non-metal, what would form? Why?
Two ions (instead of just one) that both have a full outer shell of the non-metal. This is because the extra electron would be given to another non-metal, therefore creating two ions with two non-metal ions with a full outer shell, and one metal ion with a full outer shell.
