A

Ionic compounds consist of ions held together in a lattice structure. This is a regular repeating pattern of atoms or ions.

Q

Giant ionic lattice

A
  • Occurs between oppisitely charged ions. Positive and negative ions are arranged in a regular lattice
  • High melting point due to strong ionic bonding that need lots of energy to break
  • Soluble in water as ions are charged
  • conducts electricity when aqueous or molten as ions are free to move

Q

Strength of bonding

Ionic compounds

A
  • Size of ions: smaller ions have stronger ionic bonding.
  • Example: KCl has a lower mp than NaCl as the ionic radius of the K ion is larger than that of the Na ion.
