Ionic bonding Flashcards
revision
1
Q
Ionic bonding
A
It is the elctrostatic attraction between oppisitely charged ions between a non-metal and a metal
2
Q
Ionic lattice
A
Ionic compounds consist of ions held together in a lattice structure. This is a regular repeating pattern of atoms or ions.
3
Q
Giant ionic lattice
A
- Occurs between oppisitely charged ions. Positive and negative ions are arranged in a regular lattice
- High melting point due to strong ionic bonding that need lots of energy to break
- Soluble in water as ions are charged
- conducts electricity when aqueous or molten as ions are free to move
4
Q
Strength of bonding
Ionic compounds
A
- Size of ions: smaller ions have stronger ionic bonding.
- Example: KCl has a lower mp than NaCl as the ionic radius of the K ion is larger than that of the Na ion.
