iONIC BONDING Flashcards
Ionic ?
When a metal atom and a non metal atom combine to form an ionic lattice.
Salts that contain one or more of the ions that are soluble
S - SODIUM (NA+)
N- NITRATE(NO3)-
A - AMMONIUM (NH+4)
P-POTASSIUM(K+)
E-ETHANOATE (ch3cooh)-
IONIC COMPOIUND PROPERTIES
BRITTLENESS
Ionic compounds tend to be brittle because the strong electrostatic forces holding the ions together can be disrupted by external force causing the layers of ions to slide past each other
Conductivity
In solid sate ionic compounds do not conduct electricity because the ions are in a fixed place and cannot move. However in liquid they can conduct electricity as the electrons are free to move around
Monatomic ion
Monatomic ions are formed from a single atom, either by gaining or losing one electron
electronegativity across and down a group and period
en decreases down the group
increases across the period
