Ionic Bonding Flashcards
Alkali metals
In group 1 e.g. lithium sodium potassium
What are Bonds
These are forces of attraction that hold atoms together
Why do atoms bond together and what do they need to achieve to do this
They bond together to come more stable. To do this they need to achieve Nobel gas configuration
Ions
They are charged particles formed when an atom or groups of atoms gain or loose electrons
What are cations
Metals loose electrons and form positive ions
Anions
Non metals gain electrons and form negative ions
Why do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points
They have high melting points and boiling points because they have strong electrostatic forces between ions and requires a lot of energy to break
Why are ionic compounds brittle
They are brittle because theres a repulsion
When do ionic compounds conduct electricity and why
Ionic compounds only conduct electricity when molten(heated to a liquid state) or dissolved in a solution because they need to be free to carry charge
Difference between ions and atoms
Atoms have the same number of protons and electrons but ions have an imbalance as they have an electrical charge
