Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What is ionic bonding
Bonding that involves an electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions in a lattice
What is an ionic compound
Oppositely charged ions coming together to form ionic bonds
What is a giant ionic lattice components
Oppositely charged ions held in a regular 3D dimensional lattice by electrostatic attraction
Basic unit repeated over and over again
What are the properties of an ionic lattice
Electrical conductivity, melting point, solubility, strength
What is electrical conductivity in Ionic compounds
Ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten or aqueous-but not when solid
Ions in a liquid are free to move so they carry a charge
What is melting point in ionic compounds
Ionic compounds have high melting points
Lattice is held together by strong electrostatic forces
Takes a lot of energy to break the forces =high melting point
What is solubility in ionic compounds
Ionic compounds tend to dissolve in water
Water molecules are polar
The molecule is partially negative and partially positive
The water molecules pull the ions away from the lattice and cause it to dissolve
What is strength (very brittle) in ionic compounds
dislocation leads to the layers moving and similar ions being adjacent .The repulsion splits the crystal
