Ion Channels Flashcards
Membrane potential
The difference between the voltage outside if the cell, versus the voltage inside of the cell
Main Ions
Na+
K+
Cl-
Ca++
If Ion channels open and Lets Na+ and K- in, then the membrane potential
INCREASES
If the ion channel opens and let in Cl-, then the membrane potential is
Decreased
3 types of ion channels
- Ligand-gated
- voltage-gated
- non-gated
Ligand-gated
Will only open its gate in the presence of a ligand/ neurotransmitter
Voltage-gated
Will only open its gate in the change of voltage/ membrAne potential
Non-gated
Always open and has no gate
Flux
Movement of ion across a membrane
Influx
Coming into cell
Outflux
Coming out of cell
2 factors in determining movement
Concentration gradient
Electrical gradient
Concentration gradient is STRONGER /OVER POWERED OVER
Electrical gradient
