ION AND ELECTROLYTE Flashcards
WHAT IS AN ION
An atom or a molecule that has a positive or negative electrical charge.
ANION
(Negatively charged Ion): If an atom gains electrons there will be more negative charge than positive charge.
CATION
(Positively Charged Ion): If an atom loses electrons there will be more positive charge than negative charge.
WHAT SOLUTION COULD A PERSON DRINK TO REPLACE IONS
An electrolyte-rich beverage such as a sports drink that includes both carbohydrates and electrolytes or a replacement electrolyte such as ‘staminade’
4 COMMON ELECTROLYTES FOUND IN THE BODY
Sodium: Conduct nerve impulses
Calcium: Regulate normal heart rate
