Q

What is the difference between iron deficiency anaemia vs anaemia of chronic disease?

A

Iron deficiency anaemia

  • Microcytic
  • Would have high total iron binding capacity due to iron not being bound
  • Ferritin would be low due to there being no iron to store

Anaemia of chronic disease

  • Microcytic anaemia
  • Low total iron binding capacity
  • High ferritin as it stores iron outside the blood to keep away from bacteria
