What are the principles of stroke investigation i.e what do you want to know?
A
- Confirm stroke
- identify territories
- Identify risk factors

What is the gold standard investigation for a stroke?
A
CT scan

When would thrombolysis be used and what are the criteria in terms of the type of stroke, comorbidities and time since the stroke happened?
A
- Must be a thrombolytic/ischaemic stroke
- No hypertension
- >3 hours since onset of symptoms
NB the risk of intercranial haemorrhage

When would you use vascular surgery?
A
If the problem was in the carotids
Eg Endardectomy or a carotid stent

What is the medication for a carotid problem as opposed to a heart problem?
A
Aspirin and clopidigrel V warfarin
