Investigations Flashcards
When is a Dix-hallpike manoeuvre indicated?
Done to identify and diagnose BPPV
When is the Epley’s manoeuvre indicated?
It is done to treat BPPV
What is a Automated too-acoustic emission (AOAE)?
It’s a new born hearing screen.
What is microsuction?
It’s one of the safest methods used to clean the ear without the use of water.
What is a flexible and rigid fibreoptic nasolarygoscopy?
It is a diagnostic procedure used for examining the nose, throat and airways
What is tympanometry?
Give 4 indications?
It’s a test that measures the movement of the tympanic membrane.
Indications:
- Presence of fluid in the middle ear
- Middle ear infection
- Perforation of the eardrum
- Ear canal volume
When would you refer an adult immediately to the hearing loss clinic ?
If they have unilateral or bilateral hearing loss over 3 days or less
What is a pure tone Audiogram?
The main hearing test done to identify hearing threshold levels of an individual. Enabling degree and type of hearing loss
What pure tone range is important for speech perception?
250-8000 Hertz
Is air conduction greater than bone conduction?
Yes :)
What type of X- ray is used when you are investigating a foreign body in the throat?
A lateral neck X-ray
What is an USS most useful in investigating?
- Head/ neck swelling
Why is a nasendoscopy so useful?
- It is inexpensive
- It is a quick procedure
- It can help diagnose a variety of nasal conditions from polyps to foreign bodies to cancer
What is microsuction?
Procedure done to remove ear wax.
It uses a thin microscope to suck out the wax
What test measures conductive hearing loss?
Rinnie’s test
What test measures sensorineural hearing loss?
Webers test
In sensorineural hearing loss which ear will sound be quieter in?
- The affected ear
- Both sound and air conduction is impaired
What causes sensorineural hearing loss? (2 things)
- Inner ear disease
2. Damage to the cochlear nerve
What causes conductive hearing loss? (3 things)
Diseases of the middle ear
- Ottosclerosis
- Otitis media
- Obstruction e.g cerumen impaction
In conductive hearing loss which ear will sound be louder in?
The affected side
because bone conduction is not affected
In normal sound is air greater than bone conduction?
Yes
In normal sound is air greater than bone conduction?
Yes
In sensorineural hearing loss is air or bone greater ?
Air is greater than bone
In conductive hearing loss is air or bone greater ?
Bone is greater
- because sound can’t get in
