Investigation design-variables Flashcards
What is meant by operationalising variables?
Explains how a variable will be measured or manipulated.
What is meant by extraneous variables?
One which might interfere with the dependant variable.
What is a confounding variable?
Factors other than the IV, that can cause a result in you research findings.
What is meant by the term validity?
Whether an observed effect is a genius one.
What is internal validity?
The degree to which an observed effect was due to the experimental manipulation rather than other factors. Such as confounding/extraneous
What is external validity?
The degree to which a research findings can be generalised to other settings e.g. Ecological, historical.
What are demand characteristics?
Where participants convoy from the results of the study by deliberately/or subconsciously changing their behaviour to support/or not to support the researchers hypothesis.
What do investigator effects mean?
The presence of the investigator, which can cause the participant to subconsciously change their behaviour.
How can investigator effect be reduced?
By conducting a double blind procedure where both participant and experimenter are unaware.
What is single blind design?
Participants are not aware of the researcher aims or conditions of experiment
What is double blind design?
Both participant and experimenter are unaware if the aims and hypotheses of the research
What is experimental realism?
Researcher makes an experimental task sufficiently engaging be participant.
Participant pays attention to the task and not to the fact that they are being observed.
