Investigation Design Flashcards

1
Q

Experimental design
Generate a hypothesis. Either non-directional or directional
What is the IV?
What is the DV?
What is the experimental design? Repeated measures/ independent groups/matched participants?
• What sampling technique will you use? Random/opportunity/volunteer?
• What extraneous variables need to be controlled for to make the investigation a fair and valid one?
Are there any ethical issues or areas of sensitivity?
Who will your pps be? How many males/females? Does anybody need to be excluded?
How will the investigation basically work?

Correlational study
Generate a hypothesis. Either non-directional or directional
What are the co-variables?
• What sampling technique will you use? Random/opportunity/volunteer?
What extraneous variables need to be controlled for to make the investigation a fair and valid one?
Are there any ethical issues or areas of sensitivity?
Who will your pps be? How many males/females? Does anybody need to be excluded?
• How will the investigation basically work?

Observational study
• Generate a hypothesis. Either non-directional or directional
• Will the observation be a controlled or natural observation? Will the researcher participate? Or observe from the outside?
Are there any ethical issues or areas of sensitivity?
Who will your pps be? How many males/females? Does anybody need to be excluded?
How will the investigation basically work?

Self-report methods (questionnaires and interviews)
• Generate a hypothesis. Either non-directional or directional Open (qualitative data) or closed questions (quantitative data)?
If conducting an interview will this be structured/unstructured/semi-
structured?
What sampling technique will you use? Random opportunity/volunteer?
• What extraneous variables need to be controlled for to make the investigation a fair and valid one?
o Are there any ethical issues or areas of sensitivity?
• Who will your pps be? How many males/females? Does anybody need to be excluded?

Case study
Generate a hypothesis. Either non-directional or directional
What behaviours/details are you interested in?
• What methods will you use in order to obtain data about your case?
• Who is your participant?
• What extraneous variables need to be controlled for to make the investigation a fair and valid one?
Are there any ethical issues or areas of sensitivity?
How will the investigation basically work?
What sampling procedure will be used? Continuous observation/time sampling/event sampling?
How will observations be recorded?
How many observers will there be?
What behaviours will make up the behavioural categories to be observed?
What sampling technique will you use? Random/opportunity/volunteer?
What extraneous variables need to be controlled for to make the investigation a fair and valid one?
