Investigation 5 Flashcards
1
Q
Convection
A
When a mass of a fluid, liquid, or gas, is warmer or colder than the surrounding fluid, he mass will rise or sink
2
Q
Convection Cell
A
Mass of fluid flowing in a circle
3
Q
Density
A
How heavy an object’s mass is
4
Q
Mass
A
The amount of matter in an object
5
Q
Volume
A
The amount of space the object takes up
6
Q
Density Equation
A
D=M/V
7
Q
Density and Temperature relationship
A
The warmer the temperature the less dense and vice versa
8
Q
Convection Cells in the Atmosphere
A
- Sun heats the ground by radiation
- the ground radiates energy to the carbon dioxide and water vapor in the atmosphere
- air in contact with the ground absorbs energy by conduction
- warm air rises because it is less dense
- as the warm air rises it cools, becomes more dense and sinks
- reheats by conduction and re-radiation starting the convection cycle once again
