Convection Cells in the Atmosphere

A
  • Sun heats the ground by radiation
  • the ground radiates energy to the carbon dioxide and water vapor in the atmosphere
  • air in contact with the ground absorbs energy by conduction
  • warm air rises because it is less dense
  • as the warm air rises it cools, becomes more dense and sinks
  • reheats by conduction and re-radiation starting the convection cycle once again
