Q

What is the method for Investigating Solubility?

A

-Pour 200 cm cubed of deionised water into a 250 cm beaker.
-Use a water bath to heat the beaker of water to the desired temperature. Keep the thermometer in the beaker to ensure the temperature stays constant.
-Add known masses of solid bit by bit until it stops dissolving and remains as a solid .
-Record the mass of solid that was soluble.
-Repeat steps 1-4 with the water at different temperatures.

Safety precautions in investigating Solubility

A

-Water bath can cause burns.
-Be careful with the glassware.
-Do not injest any of chemicals used.

Q

What should be found from this experiment?

A

-As the temperature increases, the mass of the particular salt that dissolves should increase.

-This is because the water particles have more kinetic energy so they are able to overcome the intermolecular forces of attraction between the solid particles and cause the solid particles to break apart.
