Q

What is the method to determine the mass of a magnesium oxide?

A

-Measure the mass of he empty crucible and lid.
-Add a sample of magnesium into the crucible and remeasure the mass of the crucible and lid.
-Calculate mass of metal added to crucible by subtracting the mass of the empty crucible from the total mass of the crucible with the metal added.
-Place crucible on tripod and gauze over a bunsen burner and heat strongly with blue flame for several minutes.
-Lift lid of crucible frequently while heating to allow sufficient air into the crucible. This ensures the magnesium is fully oxidised.
-After several minutes, check mass of crucible. Heat for another minute then check mass again. If mass remained same, magnesium fully oxidised. If not, continue heating and stop when the mass is constant.
-Measure the mass of crucible and contents. Subtract mass of empty crucible to find mass of magnesium oxide.
