Investigating Solubility Flashcards
How do you make a saturated solution?
Add excess of ammonium chloride to 10cm³ of water in a boiling tube
Carry out an experiment to investigate how temperature affects solubility
1) Make saturated solution
2) Stir solution + place into 25°C water bath
3) After 5 min, check that all excess solid has sunk to bottom of tube + use a thermometer to check solution is at 25°C
4) Weight empty evaporating basin. Pour some solution into basin, making sure not to pour any undissolved solid
5) Reweigh basin with contents, gently heat it using Bunsen Burner to remove all water
6) when all water evaporates, you’re left with pure ammonium chloride, reweigh evaporating basin + contents
7) Repeat with water bath at different temperatures.
8) Can use different masses to work out solubility at each temperature
9) Can plot results on graph
Name the formula used to find solubility
Solubility (per 100g of solvent) = mass of solid (g) / mass of water removed (g) x100
