Investigating osmosis Flashcards
1
Prepare a sucrose solution of different concentrations ranging from pure water to a very concentrated sucrose solution
2
Use cork borer to cut a potato into the same sized pieces. (1cm)
3
Divide the cylinders into groups of 3 and use a mass balance to measure the mass of each group
4
Place on group in each solution
5
Leave the cylinders in the solution for at least 40 minutes
6
Remove the cylinders and pat dry gently with a paper towel. This removes excess water from the surface of the cylinders, so you get a more accurate meat of their final mass.
7
Weight each group again and record your results.
Independent variable
Sucrose solution concentration
Controlled variable
Volume of solution
The size of the potato cylinders
The type of potato
The amount of drying
